Sonoma’s Can’t-Miss Combo

Dan Goldfield is one of the finest Pinot Noir craftsmen working in California. Sonoma Mountain's van der Kamp Vineyard is one of the state’s great Pinot sites, attracting heavy-hitters from our longtime fave Chasseur (RIP) to timeless icons like Flowers and La Follette.

Match the talent with the terroir, and you’ve got the 2022 Dutton-Goldfield Pinot Noir van der Kamp Vineyard, a world-class Pinot that stands toe-to-toe with anything you’ll find in the region for under $100.

Goldfield is well-known for working with some of the best sites in Sonoma County, and this bottle—grown on organically farmed vines planted in 1952—delivers every ounce of his acumen in every sip. Ruby red, with aromas of red fruit, violets, red roses, spice, and forest floor, it’s elegant and seductive on the palate, with dark fruit carried on supple, silky tannins, and a lasting finish.

From Astaire and Rogers to Neil Young and David Briggs, history is filled with magic-making duos. In Russian River, none have dazzled over the past two decades more than Dutton-Goldfield. The world-class winegrower-winemaker team turns fruit from Sonoma County’s most sacred terroirs into cool-climate wines that have earned legions of fans—and hundreds of five-star reviews on Wine Access.

We first began collecting Dutton-Goldfield’s ultra-juicy wild-berry Pinot Noirs at the turn of the millennium. They quickly stood out as some of the greatest bargains in the ever-higher-priced Sonoma County Pinot game.

For this bottling, they went outside the Dutton network to the wildly coveted van der Kamp Vineyard, which boasts some of California’s oldest Pinot Noir plantings. The site is meticulously farmed organically by Ulysses van der Kamp, whose philosophy is: “The best fertilizer for a vineyard is the shadow of the farmer.”

In 2022, that attention paid off, as spring weather lowered yields across the region. A hot September called for alacritous harvest decisions, and when it was all said and done, Goldfield had phenomenal van der Kamp fruit to work with. The result is a wine of impressive density and concentration, balanced by remarkable freshness—the mark of Dutton-Goldfield’s unwavering excellence.
