Nebbiolo’s New role

Nebbiolo: It’s the noble grape synonymous with the long-lived wines of Italy’s Piedmont region.

Rosato or Rosé: It’s the lip-smacking style of pink wine made all over the world, but most closely associated with France’s Provence region.

Seldom do the two meet. But the 2022 Longview Nebbiolo Rosato Juno Adelaide Hills takes wine tradition and turns it on its head.

Pale salmon with a touch of orange near the rim, this is first-class rosé from an unlikely grape and place. Showing aromas of quick-blended pineapple, orange, and apple, along with cut white strawberries and zesty acidity with flavors of freshly-squeezed lemon, orange flower, and coconut on the palate, this is a summer sipper that makes us think of nothing but warm weather.

Longview has been owned for 65 years by the Saturno family, whose Italian roots continue in their selections: Their lineup of wines includes Italian standbys like Barbera and red Nebbiolo—and blended with Pinot Nero, that grape makes for an outstanding Rosato.

Their vineyard is located just outside the township of Macclesfield in the Adelaide Hills, sitting on slopes that bring Old World estates to mind. The family’s inaugural vintage was 2001, and in the two decades since they have earned significant awards and praise.

Every wine in the Longview range is raised on their estate vineyard, the red varieties on the northern slopes, where a favorable exposure leads them to ripen consistently. The high diurnal temperature shifts result in a beautiful breadth of flavor in the finished wines.

Hand-harvested and made from free-run juice only, this is certainly unlike any rosé you’ve had—but it will refresh you in the same way as EVERY great rosé you’ve ever had.
