Balance and Richness from Two Cabernet Power Players
The hills and valleys of Northern California are awash with Cabernet passion projects. Most are thoughtfully made. Many come from well-regarded vineyards. But hardly any can match the cult-Cab pedigree of Spike Wine.
A glance through founders Anna and Mario Monticelli’s winemaking résumés would make any Cab-lover’s head spin. Both worked directly under 100-point legend Phillipe Melka, Anna making wines for Seavey and Bryant Family, and Mario as Melka’s right-hand man in his role as a consultant to Napa Valley stars. That expertise is apparent in every aspect of Spike—from the sourcing to the cellar regimen and velvety complexity in the glass.
For this Cabernet—a tribute to a loyal and loving adopted dog—the duo primarily sourced vineyards in the subregions of Chalk Hill and Suisun. A tiny AVA in the northeast corner of the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill is renowned for its volcanic white-ash soils and warmer climate, perfect for producing rich Bordeaux varieties. Suisun, meanwhile, sits between the Howell and Vaca Mountains, with the maritime climate and diurnal temperature swings that make Napa Cabernet so dynamic.
The Monticellis blended that Cabernet Sauvignon with 5% Merlot and 7% Petite Sirah, then gave it luxe treatment in the cellar—aging it for 30 months in 80% new French oak. It emerged as pure silk, with a velvety texture layered with vibrant dark fruits, tantalizing spice and chocolate notes, and rich tannins. A streak of freshness elevates everything, persisting through the long finish.
A showcase of small AVAs from two Cabernet power players, it’s an any-occasion bottle with an all-star pedigree.
