Oregon Legend's Superb Chard

In the 1980s, a rising wine critic and his brother-in-law spotted an Oregon pig farm with vast potential for world-class Pinot Noir. The brother-in-law was Mike Etzel, who saw what the land could become. The critic was Robert Parker, and together, they turned that farm into what is now known the world over as Beaux Frères—one of the Willamette Valley's most revered and influential wineries.

For decades, Beaux Frères has represented the pinnacle of Oregon Pinot Noir. But in 2023, something significant happened: Artémis Domaines—the fine wine group behind Château Latour, Clos de Tart, and Eisele Vineyard—acquired Beaux Frères, confirming to the wine world that this is an estate operating at the very top of the Oregon hierarchy.

And it's not just the Pinot Noir that earned that attention. Oregon Chardonnay is having a moment—arguably the most exciting white wine story in America right now—and Beaux Frères is at the forefront of it. This 2023 Willamette Valley Chardonnay is a wine of genuine tension and minerality—more Montrachet than California, with a precision and electric acidity that sets it apart.

The 2023 growing season opened cool and slow, then accelerated through a warm, dry summer with no significant rain from bloom through harvest. Some in the trade have suggested the vintage may be the one that makes the definitive case for Oregon Chardonnay—and Beaux Frères, with estate vines on Ribbon Ridge and sourcing from the Chehalem Mountains, was perfectly positioned to take advantage.

For this bottling, Etzel drew from three vineyard sources: the Doration and Star Mooring vineyards in the Chehalem Mountains AVA, and the estate's own vines on Ribbon Ridge. Grapes were whole-cluster pressed and fermented with ambient yeast before spending 12 months in French oak—35% new—followed by six months in stainless steel. The approach is restrained and deliberate, designed to let the fruit and the site do the talking.

What ends up in the glass is a Chardonnay of real finesse: bright citrus and orchard fruit up front, a subtle creaminess through the middle, and a long, mineral-driven finish that keeps pulling you back.
