Coming from To Kalon Vineyard in a vintage that’s shaping up as one of Napa Valley’s best ever, the 2023 Carter Cellar Cabernet The Grand Daddy Oakville is a true blockbuster. It earned 97–99 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and 96–98 from Jeb Dunnuck, placing it alongside the absolute crème de la crème of Napa Valley. 

We’ve only had the opportunity to offer Carter twice before, and this is truly one for the ages. Wine Advocate says the ‘23s are “set to surpass the 2019s and 2021s,” and we’re on board with that. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if its final score ended up even higher than the barrel scores suggest.

Vintner Mark Carter founded the winery with the simple goal of creating the best Cabernet Sauvignon possible. His first order of business was enlisting the expertise of Nils Venge—the man who crafted the very first Napa Cabernet to earn 100 points from Wine Advocate. 

By tapping the top vineyards in Napa Valley—including coveted Beckstoffer sites like To Kalon and Las Piedras—Carter has built his winery into an iconic cult brand that savvy collectors love. Now the wines are crafted by multiple 100-point Cabernet maestro Russell Bevan, and they consistently rank with Napa’s crème de la crème at prices that don’t come close to what you normally see for elite Napa wines.
