Chad Outdoes Himself, Again
Each of the last few years we’ve met up with Chad in PDX to taste his wines before they hit the market, and we’ve been blown away by each vintage…
… but the 2023? We think it’s his best yet.
To taste it, we joined him at a SE Portland restaurant known for their charcuterie, and the way the table was covered, it looked like he’d ordered an entire pig.
Chad’s always a bit on edge, even when he’s relaxed, but it ramps up a bit when he’s in PDX. We can hardly blame him. The guy’s been on a tear that would make Shohei jealous, and he’s right to be worried about someone swooping in and stealing his sources, whether he’s tromping through cellars in Sonoma or up in the PNW.
That said, when we pulled up a chair, he was more pumped than paranoid.
“You gotta understand, ‘23 is an epic, EPIC, year,” Chad told us. “Warm, it was dry, the vines had stored lots of energy because of the frost the year before.” He was really hitting his stride, fully in professor mode: “I’ve never seen canopies that lush. So that late August warmth? That September sunshine? It went straight into driving ripeness, but everything stayed in balance.”
“Colors are deep, flavors are full, but it still tastes like OREGON—just beautiful stuff.” He paused, looked around, and then lowered his voice to an urgent whisper.
“And the source for my ‘23? Whoo boy. They work with some of the absolute best vineyards in the state. Historic sites, top sites, they get whatever grapes they want. And there’s some absolute PRIMO juice in this bottle.”
He popped the cork and poured us a glass. The second the wine splashed into the bowl, we knew we had a winner: It’s full of lifted aromatics of crushed cherry, cranberry relish, fresh thyme, and rose petals. The palate is juicy and energetic, layering red raspberry, blood orange, and spiced rhubarb over subtle notes of forest floor, clove, and cedar shavings. It’s electric yet perfectly ripe—classic Oregon, but with all the components at their best.
We committed to a truckload on the spot.
