You Rarely See White Burgundy Value Like This

Domaine Chanson is a bastion of Burgundy value. As one of the oldest estates in the region, and over the centuries they’ve amassed one of the most enviable collections of vineyards out there. Those vineyards not only inform Grand Cru bottles that cost well into the triple digits, but their fantastic 2023 Bourgogne Chardonnay.

Chanson is one of Burgundy’s oldest estates, founded in 1750, and it’s telling that they’re one of just six from the 18th century that still survives today. They’ve prioritized quality in the vineyard and the cellar, acquiring 111 acres of vines scattered across the region, which allows them access to the best grapes in any season—and to deliver value that younger producers can’t match.

For their 2023 Bourgogne Chardonnay, they tapped sites in two white Burgundy hotbeds: the Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise. The Côte de Beaune holds all the white-wine Grand Crus in the Côte d’Or, whose mixture of clay and limestone and ideal exposition make it the most prestigious place in the world to grow Chardonnay. The Côte Chalonnaise, farther south, sees warmer weather, fleshing out the wine for early drinking.

The 2023 white Burgundy vintage produced an exceptional crop that shows richness without excess. After a tumultuous spring and a hot, dry summer that forced vines to draw on deep reserves of water, the grapes were harvested as summer transitioned to fall. Chanson used Champagne-style fractional pressing to preserve delicacy and minerality in the wine, which they aged in tanks to maximize freshness.

Domaine Chanson’s historic cellar, where this was aged, is a medieval tower with stone walls 26 feet thick—secure, yes, and a perfect cool place to store Chardonnay.
