2023 Domaine Michel Magnien Cote de Nuits Village 750 ml

Frédéric Magnien is one of the most famous names in Burgundy. An evangelist for biodynamic farming, his eponymous négociant house is celebrated for silky, perfumed Pinot Noir drawn from some of the region's most storied vineyards.

But the Magnien wines we covet most bear the name of Frédéric's father, Michel.

These bottles come from the vines Frédéric tends on the family's estate, and only a fraction of the overall Magnien production ever wears the Michel Magnien label. They're consistently among the purest, most vibrant wines the family makes, and the kind you'll find poured at MICHELIN-starred tables.

The estate itself is a study in patience and conviction. For generations the Magniens sold their grapes to the local cooperative, until 1993, when Frédéric joined his father and convinced him to bottle the entire harvest under their own name. Under Frédéric's stewardship the domaine turned to biodynamic farming, earning Demeter certification in 2015 and banishing herbicides and synthetic fertilizers to let the terroir speak more clearly.

That same restraint carries into the cellar. Frédéric folds in a portion of whole clusters and ages the wine entirely in used barrels, with no new oak to gloss over the fruit. What lands in the glass is Pinot Noir at its most transparent.

This bottling comes from Brochon, at the northern edge of the Côte de Nuits, where the vineyards sit shoulder to shoulder with Gevrey-Chambertin. Part of the commune is even entitled to the Gevrey name, and the Pinot here carries a familiar echo of that village's depth and spice. Bottled instead as Côte de Nuits-Villages, it's the kind of overachiever we're always hunting for.

The old vines lend a layer of richness, but 2023 keeps everything bright. A generous, sunny season that still delivered fresh, fragrant reds, it gave this wine juicy red fruit, energetic acidity, and a clear vein of minerality from start to finish.
