2023 Domaine Vincent Wengier Chablis 750 ml

We taste a lot of Chablis over the course of the year, but the 2023 Domaine Vincent Wengier might just take the crown as our new dollar-for-dollar champion. 

Organically grown and fermented with native yeasts, painstakingly crafted by the fourth generation of a dyed-in-the-wool Chablis clan, it’s a beautiful, crisp white wine that’s as versatile as we could ever want. We’ll be pouring it all fall, winter, and spring. There’s no occasion that it won’t enhance. 

Chablis is awash in young winemakers looking to make a name for themselves, but few can touch the talent and ability of Vincent Wengier. The fourth generation to lead his family’s domaine, Vincent immediately started to raise the quality of the house when he put his name on the shingle above the door in 2018. He also drew a lot of local attention.

The vineyards Vincent works with are tightly spaced, which increases vine competition, increasing quality but making the vines harder to work. He has converted them all to organic farming—he weeds them mechanically rather than chemically four or five times per season—and his sites are not only certified organic, but carry a HVE certification for high environmental value in their sustainable practices.

In the cellar, he presses with two gentle pneumatic presses, carefully settling the must to ensure only the cleanest, purest juice goes into fermentation. He’s also committed to work solely with native yeasts, believing they produce a more complex, interesting wine and express his terroir Chablisienne more accurately. 

Those small steps paid big dividends in the beautifully warm 2023 vintage, resulting in a gorgeous Chablis.
