Premier Cru Pedigree, Grand Cru Quality
We are huge fans of Pernand-Vergelesses. The village is an absolute GOLD MINE for white Burgundy values—especially the Premier Cru “En Caradeux.” It sits just across from the legendary Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne, one of the most precious white-wine terroirs in the world.
In the 2023 vintage, a fantastic season that caused Vinous’s Neal Martin to declare “I adore the 2023 vintage… I am hard pushed to think of another vintage so pleasurable,” Louis Latour crafted the 2023 Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru from En Caradeux. And in an era when Premier Crus from Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet are priced well into three digits, this gorgeously concentrated and textured Burgundy stands out from its peers, big time.
This gorgeous wine shows a pale gold color in the glass. The bouquet is elegant and expressive, offering a mix of ripe citrus, green apple, and pear skin. Subtle notes of hazelnut and crushed limestone add a layer of complexity, while hints of wet stone and flint introduce a mineral edge. A delicate touch of toasted almonds and fresh cream add depth on the medium-bodied palate, which features a long, clean finish marked by mineral lift and citrus oil. It’s an elegant, focused, and quietly powerful expression of white Burgundy.
We can’t think of a more affordable way to experience the savory, flinty, citrusy magic of the Hill of Corton than this remarkably underpriced “insider’s” Premier Cru. Even James Suckling once wondered aloud, “Why isn’t this appellation taken more seriously?” We think it’s because it’s hard to pronounce. If that means it stays a secret, we can live with that.
