    Radio Silence—Times Two

Two NDAs was a first for us. And considering how long we’ve been in the game, that’s really saying something.

Two trips up the valley. Two meetings with winery attorneys. Two rock-solid NDAs, four law-office coffees, one uninspiring muffin, and so many freaking signatures. What was worth all that?

Only one of the most scorching NDA deals we’ve done this decade.

This was made by one of the first families of Napa Valley wine. We’re not kidding when we tell you that their last name is synonymous with $400 Cabernet. Given the family’s history and the triple-digit prices their wines command, how were we able to get such a spectacular Cab at this price?

Simple: They don’t make an Atlas Peak Cab. Never have. But for years, they’ve contracted with a grower with one of the high-elevation AVA best sites because mountain fruit is what gives their $150 Napa Valley bottling its stout backbone. Every year, they vinify a pure Atlas Peak Cabernet—which would fit right into their single-AVA lineup at $250, we might add—using precisely as much as they need to achieve the Napa Valley Cabernet they want. The rest, well, it provides an EXCELLENT opportunity to those who know what to do with it.

Now, for NDA part deux. Between the time when this wine was harvested and today, the source winery sold—to ANOTHER entity that’s nearly as famous as the first. They tend one of the most famous vineyards in all of Napa Valley, and the deal they made was as airtight as a long-range sub—these are no Napa Valley rookies we’re dealing with here. Two NDAs? A pain, yes, but also a small price to pay for a wine like this one.
