The Frankel Family’s Finest

Sculpterra has been farming the same 265-acre estate on Linne Road since the early 1990s, when Dr. Warren Frankel planted his first Cabernet Sauvignon vines on land he’d originally put to pistachios. For years the fruit went to other producers—the Frankels were growers first, their Geneseo District vines quietly underpinning wines from around the appellation before the family ever made one of their own. That’s not a small thing in Paso Robles, where the best vineyards have always been known quantities among the people who matter.

Paul Frankel grew up on that land, learned the rhythms of the ranch before he could drive, and came home after Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to take over winemaking at 22. Statuesque is the fullest expression of what those blocks can do—three distinct Cabernet Sauvignon parcels, Autopista, Chivos, and Bentley Ironworks, vinified separately and assembled with Syrah and Petite Sirah into something larger than any single variety could manage alone.

The Geneseo District is a lower-elevation stretch of gravelly, silty clay soils with calcareous elements that favor deep color, firm structure, and the kind of spice that makes Cabernet from this part of Paso worth seeking out. Warmer and drier than the westside districts, with the diurnal swings that define the appellation working into the fruit over a long growing season.

The 2023 vintage was the one Paso winemakers had been waiting for. Three consecutive drought years had taken a toll, and then January brought the first of several record rainfall events, replenishing soils and restoring vine health across the region. A cool spring pushed budbreak and flowering later than usual; summer temperatures stayed steady. Harvest ran well into November. The extended hang time delivered even, unhurried ripening—and wines with real structure and balance to show for it.

In the glass, Statuesque is exactly what this blend is designed to be. The Petite Sirah anchors everything with deep color and serious tannin; the Syrah threads spice and aromatic lift through the mid-palate; the Cabernet brings the architecture—fruit definition, backbone, length. It drinks well now and has plenty of road ahead.
