Burgundy’s New Frontier
On our recent Burgundy trip, we reveled in the Grand Crus on our visit to Louis Latour—but the wine we couldn’t wait to bring to our members was not a $1,000 rarity. It was the Simonnet-Febvre Des Lyres de Chardonnay. Made by Louis Latour from grapes in the Coteaux de l’Auxois, the wine delivered a crisp, bright Burgundian experience that absolutely wowed us.
This wine compares favorably to just about every affordable white Burgundy out there—but it is not white Burgundy itself. That’s because, despite its clay and limestone origins, despite the vineyards’ location just west of the Côte d’Or, despite the historic Burgundy house behind the bottle, the 2023 Des Lyres lies outside the bounds of what’s officially Bourgogne.
And frankly, that’s the reason it’s such a good value.
The Coteaux de l’Auxois is just west of the Côte d’Or—it’d take you longer to get to Napa from Healdsburg than to Morvan from Beaune—which means it’s geographically and geologically similar to the heart of Burgundy. But the Coteaux de l’Auxois is cooler, more rugged, and has fewer commercial centers. So historically, it has not been easy to make (or sell) excellent wine there.
But the combination of warm vintages and modern viticultural understanding has radically increased the quality of the grapes grown in the Auxois—even as pricing and recognition have lagged behind. Simonnet-Febvre has been one of the biggest champions of the region, using their centuries of experience—and the resources of the larger Louis Latour organization—to make modern wines that show off why smart money is starting to move in the region.
2023 was an outstanding vintage in Burgundy, but even better in the cool Coteaux de l’Auxois. This bottling shows off a beautiful dichotomy between orchard and citrus fruit, with brightness that never feels harsh. It’s aged in a mixture of stainless steel and French oak that’s carefully tuned to avoid oaky flavors.
The result is a delicious ringer for white Burgundy that is radically underpriced.
