Rooted in Moores Valley

Yamhill-Carlton has long been one of Oregon's most prestigious appellations. The wineries that put it on the map in the 90s—Ken Wright, Shea, and their neighbors—built a reputation for Pinot Noir so compelling that high prices have become simply part of the deal in this corner of the Willamette Valley.

Which is why Sylvanus Estate turns so many heads. Founded by Lisa McDonald and Christian Eddleman, the winery takes its name from the frontiersman who gave Moores Valley its name—rooting the estate's identity in the specific piece of ground it calls home.

That ground is in a particularly special corner of Yamhill-Carlton. Moores Valley sits on the western edge of the AVA, where the Coast Range begins to rise and Douglas Firs crowd the hillsides. It's wilder and more rugged than the appellation's more famous areas, but the geography works in the wine's favor: proximity to the Pacific Ocean creates a longer growing season than sites farther inland, and the valley's topography produces a rain shadow that keeps things drier—ideal conditions for Pinot Noir with the hang time to develop real complexity.

The 2023 vintage gave growers nearly everything they could ask for. Wine Spectator rated the year 95 points for Oregon, and the wines bear that out: even ripening, bright natural acidity, and the kind of depth that only comes when conditions line up from bud to harvest.

Sylvanus planted their estate vineyard to a mix of Pommard, 777, 115, and Mt Eden clones to build complexity into the blend from the ground up. Each clone is harvested and vinified separately to ensure perfect ripeness, then brought together for the final wine. Ten months in 40% new French Oak adds texture and structure without overriding the fruit.

The result is pure Yamhill-Carlton: red cherry and wild strawberry framed by rose petal and blood orange zest, with silky tannins, bright acidity, and a long, mineral-threaded finish.
