Napa Cab of Endless Intrigue

There’s a handful of Napa Valley wines that offer something special beyond impeccable pedigree, beyond impeccable quality, beyond stratospheric scores. Beyond rarity, even.

We're talking about wines of intrigue. Wines that even collectors with the deepest of pockets don't always have the privilege to enjoy. These are wines that, when brought up from the cellar, will turn the heads of the most hardened hedonists on the planet.

There are few of these wines out there. And none generates more envy and excitement than TOR's Black Magic Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2023, from a Napa Valley vintage gaining buzz as perhaps the best this century, earned a perfect 100-point score. Jim Gordon—the Napa veteran writing for James Suckling—summed it up nicely:

"A super dense, layered and structured wine that's built for the ages. It's sleek yet powerful, packed with tannins and equally powerful black fruit, with accents of minerals and cocoa." He summed it up as "the most concentrated, muscular and robust of Tor's lineup." Not for nothing, Black Magic is the wine that Phil Mickelson gulped from the Wanamaker Trophy after winning the 2021 PGA Championship.

Tor Kenward is one of the most revered cult Cabernet maestros in California. For his TOR label, he and his 100-point winemaker Jeff Ames only work with the absolute greatest Napa Valley terroirs—sites like To Kalon, Dr. Crane, Vine Hill Ranch, and Melanson—and none of their wines is more coveted than Black Magic.

This wine is always shrouded in a bit of mystery. It comes from a rigid barrel selection and is not made in every vintage. It was first conceived after Kenward and Ames isolated a special selection of the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard. Though details on Black Magic are always scant—would you really expect TOR to spill all of this wine's secrets?—the 2023 comes largely from some of the greatest sites in Napa Valley: the legendary Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville, the equally revered Vine Hill Ranch, and some from Pritchard Hill. It's a wine made by instinct, by feel—as seamless and intense as anything you'll taste.
