Taking Sonoma Cabernet to the Limit

When we started the Yesterday label, we did it with ONLY the finest vineyards and sources in California in mind. The first edition came from one of Oakville’s most iconic wineries—and the 2023 Yesterday Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley, we gotta say, is in the same conversation.

We scored this NDA release from the 100-point ace who has almost single-handedly put Alexander Valley on the ultra-elite list of top terroirs, alongside Oakville, St. Helena, and Howell Mountain. Practically dry-farmed on AV’s red volcanic soils, the wine is brimming with opulent dark fruit concentration and supported by a bold, rock-solid structure that would make the Right Bank proud. It’s a modern, focused Cabernet that balances power and finesse, with the depth to evolve beautifully over the next decade.

This winemaker’s CV is a thing to marvel at. We can’t go into much detail, lest we snag one of the NDA’s many tripwires, but he’s put in time at some of the world’s top chateaux and estates. And by all accounts, he’s just getting started—still a “rising star,” as one critic quipped.

By setting up shop in Sonoma, this young superstar has made his home in a place where, unlike Napa, some of the greatest terroirs may still be discovered. To maintain his estate’s sky-high reputation as he pushes the envelope on new ideas and vineyards, he releases only a fraction of his production under his own label. That leaves a few rare opportunities for us to step in and snatch up a barrel of premium wine like this.
