Front-Row Seats to 2023 Napa Magic

There’s nothing better than being there when a great talent puts it all together.

Think Shohei Ohtani in 2021, hitting and pitching his way to an unprecedented two-way season and MVP honors. Or 1972, when Bowie birthed his alter-ego Ziggy Stardust in a sweaty southwest London pub.

2023 will be that kind of vintage for the winery that supplied this NDA-shielded blockbuster Cabernet. This is a showstopping, stylish release born of Oakville gravel plots that have never produced a bargain of this magnitude before.

This property has always been considered in league with the big boys. But this will be their breakout season—the year they moved from “one of the best” status to fully “iconic.” Or as Jeb Dunnuck has described their recent Cabernets: “insanely good.”

That evolution turned in part on the addition of two superstar 100-point consulting winemakers to the payroll. But the potential for this kind of seamless, supple Cabernet fruit was always here, inscribed in the geology of the Mayacamas foothills that have produced some of Napa’s most impressive bottlings ever.

In real estate this pedigreed, to name even one of the three or four marquee estates that lie within a half mile of this location would instantly give its away identity. One neighbor might arguably be the most famous winery in Napa, fetching over $1,000 per bottle. A hop-skip away is another legendary estate that’s won 100-point scores from every critic under the sun. The wine we are selling today would, under its native label, likely go for $400+.

One nice thing about being friends with winemakers is that they tend to move around, opening doors to new connections. We’re buddies with the two world-class consultants that came onboard at this estate. As they helped refine the estate’s micro-fermentations—individually fermenting parcels as specific as a single row of vines—they developed a blend that was different from the official estate release, but so good they were loath to see its potential wasted.
