The Best Sonoma Winemaker You’ve Never Heard Of?

The Mazzoni family has been in Alexander Valley for over a century, and their vineyard holdings are some of the most coveted in Sonoma County. They’ve become a go-to grapegrower for top-tier wineries like Jordan and Ridge—and a slew of clients we aren’t allowed to mention.

But the family reserves some of the very best fruit for their own Zialena label. Crafted by the talented Mark Mazzoni, who worked for Littorai and Thomas Rivers Brown in his wine upbringing, these are some of the best under-the-radar bottles you’ll find in California.

The 2023 Zialena Sauvignon Blanc Geyserville is a spare-no-expense bottling that’s fermented and aged in egg-shaped concrete tanks—perfect for the grape. The concrete is slightly porous, mimicking the texture that’s imparted by oak barrels without imparting any oak flavors. The result is beautifully aromatic, clean and refreshing, with a perfect weight on the palate.

Mark Mazzoni grew up immersed in the wine business, AND he paid his dues along the way. As the fourth generation of the Mazzoni winemaking family in Geyserville, the ethic of hard work was instilled in him from a young age. It served him well in both the field and the cellar, managing vineyards for the likes of Littorai and Thomas Rivers Brown and making wine at places like Vineyard 29.

In short, he may well be the best Sonoma County winemaker you’ve never heard of—and he has his pick of the fruit from his family’s 100 acres of vines in Geyserville. He gives the wine a white-glove, high-luxe treatment. The concrete egg tanks used for fermentation were custom-built for Zialena, and the combo of texture and vibrancy in this bottling is electric.
