Pinot Grigio at its Alpine Peak
We'd challenge you to find a more classic Pinot Grigio than Cantina Tramin. It's a perfect modern example of the grape—an absolute rockstar of a white wine, with enough fruit and complexity to work on its own, but the brightness and personality to be a slam-dunk pairing with an enormous range of food.
High in the Dolomite mountains, Alto Adige's rocky soils and cool climate allow for beautifully produced crisp whites. This is ground zero for Pinot Grigio that has brightness to go along with the grape's trademark cheerful fruit—and Cantina Tramin's excellent 2024 version has captured our hearts and palates. With its fresh personality and mineral drive, this isn't your grandma's Pinot Grigio—but we're sure she'd get down with the wine's charming fruit and easy-to-love personality.
Cantina Tramin's wines are a testament to the standard of white-winemaking in Alto Adige's farmer cooperatives—some of the best in the world. Located in the heart of Alto Adige in the town of Termeno (Tramin in German), this winery comprises one of the oldest networks of farmers forming a cooperative, founded in 1889. It's a gleaming example of what a talented winemaker like Willi Stürz can do with a wealth of raw materials at his disposal. Willi was named Gambero Rosso's "Winemaker of the Year" in 2004—the highest honor in Italian wine.
A native of Termeno, Willi joined the winery in 1992 and has been deeply committed to its success ever since. He's a professional of uncommon depth and focus, cultivating a masterful balance of traditional winemaking with modern technology and expertise. Under his direction, Tramin has earned a whopping 12 Tre Bicchieri awards—most winemakers would be thrilled to achieve that honor once—a testament to his talent and the quality of fruit he works with.
Tramin works with 270 member growers across 575 acres, all small family farms that devote an exceptional level of attention to detail. The cooperative operates on a human scale with a farmer-to-land ratio similar to that of a small estate, allowing for delicate hand-harvesting from low-yielding vineyards. Willi ferments the wines in stainless steel to preserve freshness and minerality.
