Among the First Growths, Mouton Rothschild is a special case.

It was originally classified as a Second Growth, in 1855, but it was promoted to First Growth in 1973 during a rare review of the classification. To this day, it is the only Médoc wine to have been promoted in the 1855 classification. Considering the remarkable work and innovation conducted by Baron Philippe de Rothschild since the 1920s, this promotion was completely justified.

A man with a passion for theatre and cinema, and also a racecar driver, Philippe de Rothschild is a multifaceted and talented man who in 1922, at the age of 20, took charge of the domain. At that time, Bordeaux wine merchants received bulk wine in barrels from the chateau which they then bottled and labelled. But Philippe de Rothschild decided to change that and bottle his wines on the property. His objective was threefold: to have total control over the quality of his wines, to improve the distribution of his château, and to develop the reputation of the Pauillac appellation.

Today, Pauillac is at the pinnacle of Bordeaux, and Mouton is at the pinnacle of Pauillac—and the world. A truly iconic and inspiring wine.
