Devil’s Well Raises The Bar… Again

Devil’s Well is as dark and as shrouded in secrecy as the name would suggest. But one thing about it makes it positively angelic: The wines keep getting better, year after year.

We first offered the 2020 Devil’s Well Cabernet, and it was a sensation. Our warehouse has never packed orders faster, and we were deluged with re-order requests. It went into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot, and every single offer since has sold out.

But one thing that separates Devil’s Well from the pack is how they’ve used their success to tap into better and better sites in Napa. The last vintage we offered came from vineyards across the valley, some fruit from Oakville—but this 2024 edition is entirely from Napa’s most famous AVA.

Oakville is known for dark fruit, powerful wines, and seductive textures. The AVA is small, but it’s the home of Screaming Eagle, of Harlan, of Opus One, not to mention Futo, Maybach, To Kalon, Tench… we could go on for a while. Oakville grapes usually come with a hefty price tag. But the current wine market has opened some doors, and the Devil’s Well team walked right through them—understanding that the site’s name could NEVER be printed on a label or tech sheet.

As is the (exceptional) norm for Devil’s Well, the prime fruit is handled with panache. The ability to extract layers of dark fruits like blackberry preserves, dark cherries, and smashed plums—while keeping tannins rich and velvety—is fantastic. These Cabs always gain a beautiful layer of milk chocolate and vanilla flavors from new oak, and the 2024 saw a full 80% new French barrels. There’s a reason the winery charges well north of $100, and it’s that the wine is made with a ton of care, no corners cut.
