A Cooler Take on Australian Riesling

In June 1996, Wine Spectator blasted out “Australia Hits the Big Time” on a cover featuring three towering bottles of Shiraz. Two were collector-favorite bottlings: Henschke Mount Edelstone and Penfolds Grange, which retail for $190 and $600+. The third was from Mount Langi Ghiran, an outfit that had been relatively obscure—until that cover launched it to worldwide recognition.

Demand skyrocketed, especially domestically. That’s why 80% of Mount Langi’s outstanding wines often never leave Australia, and why we had to work for years to nab our first allocation.

While Langi made its name with Shiraz, the Grampians’ high elevation and cooling alpine influences also make it a superb home for Riesling. Cold nights, long growing seasons, and ancient granite soils combine to deliver wines of precision, energy, and striking mineral detail—qualities that shine clearly in this bottling.

Mount Langi Ghiran founder Trevor Mast began humbly, toiling in a tin shed that smelled of garlic from the salamis that the winery’s founding family used to cure there. First as a consulting winemaker, and then as the owner, Mast set about doing something revolutionary: creating cool-climate Australian wines that could rival Old World finesse.

He picked the perfect region. The Grampians’ altitude and rugged terrain slow ripening and preserve natural acidity, giving Riesling the tension and longevity more often associated with classic European examples. Careful picking and gentle winemaking allow the site’s character to take center stage, resulting in wines that are both immediately compelling and built to evolve.

The 2024 vintage in Victoria favored whites of clarity and precision. A cool, steady growing season allowed fruit to ripen slowly and evenly, locking in natural acidity while preserving delicate aromatics. Timely rainfall and mild conditions through harvest delivered pristine grapes with excellent balance, making 2024 an especially strong year for Riesling in the high-altitude sites of the Grampians.
