Spain’s White Whale
Before even knowing the price, we were dazzled by the 2024 Pago del Vicario Blanco de Tempranillo.
From one of just 20 elite vineyards to hold Spain’s highly coveted Vino de Pago status, this white wine made from red Tempranillo grapes has a thrilling succulence and refreshing personality that must be tasted to be believed.
Our tasting panel was thrilled by this gem, which delivers an uncommon experience: It's crafted by the visionary Pago Del Vicario in what might be the most interesting and novel expressions of Tempranillo we’ve tasted: one made like a dry white wine, which gives it a red-fruit aroma and a lively, succulent finish.
Pago Del Vicario was founded in 2000, nestled between the Guadiana River and the Montes de Toledo, and remains a key producer in this corner of La Mancha. Their telescope-shaped winery, seamlessly integrated into the landscape, symbolizes their forward-thinking approach.
In the sun-drenched vineyards of Ciudad Real, vines struggle but produce concentrated, expressive fruit. The Tempranillo grapes for this blanc de noirs come exclusively from the estate's own vineyards, showcasing the unique terroir of this Pago. Harvested by hand and vinified with state-of-the-art technology, the result is a white wine of complexity, elegance, and intensity.
Pago Del Vicario reserves their Vino de Pago designation only for wines that truly express their exceptional terroir. The 2024 vintage proves why this category is so important. This is a wine that challenges expectations and delights the senses, brimming from the glass with notes of Asian pear and ripe citrus blossoms mingling with slight herbal notes and touches of ripe fruit, such as white peach. It’s the kind of wine that you’ll reach for on any given weeknight.
