2024 Pecchenino Nebbiolo Botti Langhe 750 ml

The Vigna Botti sits at the heart of Pecchenino’s Bricco Botti estate in Dogliani—the hilltop where the family built their historic winery into an 18th-century farmhouse, and the home ground from which this Nebbiolo is drawn. The name works on two levels: “Botti” is the vineyard, and botti are the large oak casks in which the wine is raised. Place and method, compressed into a single word.

Pecchenino built their reputation not in Barolo, but in nearby Dogliani, where they produced some of the greatest bottles of Dolcetto in Italy. It takes immeasurable skill to turn a “lesser” grape into world-class, ageworthy wines, and the attention to detail they’re known for is on full display here.

The Nebbiolo at Bricco Botti grows on south and southwest-facing slopes in the calcareous-clayey soils of the southern Langhe. After fermentation, the wine spends 12 months in those 25-hectoliter oak casks—botti in every sense. The scale matters: large vessels impart structure without imposing oak character, giving the wine room to develop on its own terms rather than the barrel’s.

The family’s story begins in the early 20th century, when grandfather Attilio worked just over eight hectares. Brothers Orlando and Attilio took over in the late 1980s, expanding to 35 hectares across Dogliani, Monforte d’Alba, and Bossolasco, and building a reputation that now runs from the DOCG Dolcetti that made their name to Barolos from some of the Langhe’s most storied crus.

The 2024 is a classical vintage—proportioned the way Piedmont used to make them, more aromatic than muscular. Red cherry, wild strawberry, and dried rose lead the nose alongside orange peel, crushed herbs, and spice. The palate is energetic and finely structured, with bright acidity and supple tannins that provide grip without austerity. With air, black tea, licorice, and crushed stone emerge—Nebbiolo’s savory register, opening up the way it does when the grape isn’t pushed too hard.

For a variety that so often demands years of patience, this is Nebbiolo at its most welcoming—elegant, transparent, and ready.
