Devil’s Well Goes to Stags Leap

Devil’s Well is as dark and as shrouded in secrecy as the name would suggest. But one thing about it makes it positively angelic: the wines keep getting better, year after year.

We first offered the 2020 Devil’s Well Cabernet, and it was a sensation. Our warehouse has never packed orders faster, and we were deluged with re-order requests. It went into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot, and every single offer since has sold out. Our members have called it “exceptional Cabernet” and a “tremendous value”—and the team behind it took that as a challenge to keep raising the bar.

The Resolution is their latest move. Built from the same winemaking philosophy that made Devil’s Well a phenomenon, it draws from NDA-protected vineyard sites in the Stags Leap District—sites so coveted that their names can never appear on a label or tech sheet.

Stags Leap District is one of Napa’s most storied AVAs: a compact, dramatic slice of valley floor tucked between two volcanic palisades, where warm days give way to cool Pacific air each evening. That diurnal swing is everything. It slows ripening, preserves acidity, and coaxes from Cabernet Sauvignon a combination of dark-fruited power and elegant structure that few places on earth can replicate. The region produced the wine that beat Bordeaux’s finest at the 1976 Judgment of Paris. Shafer, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Clos Du Val—the names here are legendary, and so are the prices.

The fruit that went into the Resolution came from within that same geography—handled with the care and intention that has defined every wine this team has made. Dark plum, blackberry compote, and cassis form the core, with lush, juicy depth and rich tannin that speaks to the quality of the sites beneath.

There’s a reason wines from this AVA sell for well over $100 under their own names. The Resolution is made from the same caliber of fruit, by the same proven team—just without the famous label.
