Spain’s Great White Secret
Godello is one of the great white grapes of Spain, though it very nearly disappeared. By the 1970s it had dwindled to a few hundred vines scattered through the hills of the country’s northwest, all but forgotten. A handful of growers recognized its potential and coaxed it back, and it has since become the region’s answer to Chardonnay: brisk acidity, genuine palate weight, and a floral, stone-fruit lift that belongs to Godello alone.
Bierzo sits on a kind of frontier, tucked into the northwest corner of Castilla y León where continental Spain gives way to the green, Atlantic pull of Galicia. Warm days, cool nights, and slate-laced soils give the wines here their distinctive energy and mineral spine.
It’s a region far better known for red Mencía, which makes a white of this quality something of a discovery. The best examples are floral and elegant, with a length and precision that reward a closer look.
Soto del Vicario is the Bierzo home of the Pago del Vicario estate, which came north from La Mancha to plant its flag near Cacabelos. The vineyards are the real treasure: old vines, many of them more than a century old, rooted in the slopes around the winery.
Winemaker Sandra Luque Muñoz has guided these wines since 2006. For the Go de Godello, she ferments in barrel and ages the wine on its lees—patient, hands-on work that builds the texture and depth that set this bottle apart.
The result is a white of real presence: orange blossom, honeysuckle, and white peach on the nose, then a firm, stony palate lifted by citrusy, mouthwatering acidity and a finish that lingers.
It’s a natural at the table—poured cold alongside grilled fish or roast chicken, or on its own before dinner—the sort of wine that quietly steals the show and leaves everyone asking what it is.
