A Fine Discovery, 180 Years Later!

Besserat de Bellefon has been producing great Champagnes since 1843, but this is the first we have offered at Wine Access. When you open the bottle, you’ll see why we’re so excited.

The modern history of this domain begins In 1920, when Edmond married Yvonne de Méric de Bellefon, daughter of an old Champagne family, and the Besserat de Bellefon winery came into being. By 1978, their wines were glass-poured on the supersonic Concorde line. Located in Épernay, the winery is today part of the Lanson-BCC Group’s portfolio of Champagnes and is renowned for exceptional value.

The chef de cave is Cédric Thiébault, who has worked for the house since 1999, but was appointed winemaker in 2006. He and the winery owe much of their quality to their exceptional sources. Three Grand Cru villages supplied this cuvée—Avize, Mesnil-sur-Oger, and Louvois—plus five Premier Cru villages. The still Pinot Noir portion, which makes up 11% of the wine, comes from the Grand Cru Bouzy, as well as Les Riceys and Vincelles.

Since the 1930s, the house has added less “liqueur de tirage” than most houses. This results in 25% less pressure in the bottle than your normal Champagne bottling, which gives a finer bead, creamier mousse, and a more vinous personality. It’s a blend of 50% Meunier, 25% Chardonnay, and 25% Pinot Noir, and it sports a lilting chalkiness and vinous quality that make it a terrific aperitif.

The orange-pink color here is thanks to three years en tirage, then a six-month rest after disgorgement. That has rounded out its fresh red fruit profile with notes of wild red raspberry and redcurrant, with hints of red roses, marzipan, and vanilla.
