Wine Access Exclusive Champagne
EXCLUSIVE! Top Champagne, energetic and complex, with in-house extended aging for $39.99 isn’t a promise we can make often. Today is one of the rare days that we can. Formed in 1964, Jacquart’s deep network of vignerons, all of whom must own their vineyards, gives it access to incredible Grand Cru and Premier Cru grapes—making it essentially an “estate” bottling. Jacquart bubblies have become famous for bearing “more than a small resemblance to the great Champagne made by the tiny house of Salon, which sells for three to four times the price,” says Wine Advocate’s Robert Parker. How? Incredibly, Jacquart holds reserve wines for up to a decade, blending in trace amounts to elevate and add complexity to blends. This NV Champagne Jacquart Brut Mosaic Signature contains an astounding 35% reserve wine! A classic blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, it is aged an astounding 5 years on the lees before bottling (2-3 years more than most non-vintage cuvées) and is beautifully perfumed, with a style that is richer, filled with a fabulously mineral mix of orchard fruit and crushed slate. An absolutely killer deal that every fizzy enthusiast should have a couple cases of in the cellar. $39.99 each—ONLY on Wine Access—with shipping included on just 4.
A few months ago, we were in Champagne, enjoying an after-hours tasting with a sommelier friend. All the wines on the table were from small producers, most of whom sold their entire production at the estate to Parisians and northern Europeans who made the annual pilgrimage to small villages like Cramant, Cuis, and Ambonnay. Unlike the big-house Champagnes that were carefully assembled for a mass-market audience, these small-producer Champagnes were utterly artisanal, wonderfully complex, and refined.
But this bright yellow-gold NV Jacquart Brut Mosaic Signature BESTED some of the table’s better-known competition at a far better value, which, we learned, is poured at London’s ultra-exclusive Royal Ascot horse-racing event. Jacquart started as a bold gathering of 30 small estates in the early 1960s that sought to craft Côtes des Blanc wines without interference from the Grandes Marques houses. Every single member must OWN their vineyards—making the final blend essentially an “estate” bottling.
Today, Jacquart is able to tap some of the best Premier Cru and Grand Cru properties in Côtes des Blanc and Montagne de Reims. Jancis Robinson has called it one of Champagne’s “greatest buys” while Decanter has saluted the “Jacquart style” as “crisp with light richness, but recently there has been more elegance and oak influence.”
To our regular dismay, and thanks to in-the-know sommeliers, most of our favorite under-$40 Champagnes get ticketed for the likes of Per Se, The French Laundry, Daniel, Jean-Georges, and Eleven Madison Park. We caught a break this spring with Jacquart, signing up for EVERY SINGLE BOTTLE coming to the U.S.
