Superb Meunier from Its Marne Heartland
“Sur Le Grand Marais” is a curious name for a vineyard site.
It means “On the Big Swamp.” But thankfully, the three-acre “big swamp” in Baslieux-Sous-Châtillon—located about 35 minutes southwest of Reims in the Marne Valley—was drained 80 years ago. The clay soils here are ideal for Meunier, which makes up 100% of this cuvée.
The vineyard sits at the base of the slope, understandably in a low-lying area, and being a frost-prone zone there once was a small stone shed for storing “chaufferettes” (smudge pots), sheltered by a walnut tree. Today all that remains is the walnut tree.
The story of Maison Liébart-Régnier begins in 1960, when Lucien Liébart and his wife Georgette Régnier settled in her home village of Baslieux-Sous-Châtillon. Today, their son Laurent, his wife Valérie, and their daughters Alexandra and Marion do the hard work of maintaining this charming estate, which comprises 11 hectares.
A very eco-conscious estate, the family views their land as an asset they are simply borrowing from future generations.
Liébart-Régnier’s Sur Le Grand Marais Brut Nature comes from multiple vintages, with 20% from 2018, and 80% from 2019. Being a Brut Nature, it does not receive a dosage at all. Instead, it relies on the natural richness of these Pinot Meunier grapes for its palate-tickling appeal. We loved the perfectly dry wine’s citrusy, blossomy personality and its refreshing, zesty cut. It’s the ultimate palate refresher, and we know it will delight you down to the last drop.
