NYC Sommelier Champagne Love Affair
NYC Sommelier Champagne Love Affair
Champagne is not for occasions. Champagne is the occasion. And we see no reason why Wine Access clients shouldn’t enjoy Grand Cru, Michelin star-approved Champagne everyday. While some will ask immediately for break-the-bank classics like Dom Pérignon or Cristal, others know to ask what the sommelier is drinking. The somms at Aureole, Babbo, Bouley, Le Bernardin, and Sushi Nakazawa in NYC are having a love affair with today’s Grand Cru bubbly — the NV Robert Moncuit Blanc de Blancs. Now it’s your turn.
New York City beverage managers drink a lot of Champagne. They sell a lot of Champagne. They’re always looking for great wine they can list at an accessible price, and they’re a picky bunch. They tend to prefer grower-producers for their focus on farming and greater reflection of terroir, but as yesterday's discoveries become the new classics, distributors raise prices.
We’ve caught one of these breakout stars — enter Robert Moncuit — before it’s been fully discovered by the masses. Robert Moncuit has been producing wines in the Le Mesnil — the heart of Champagne’s Chardonnay vineyards — for four generations, since 1889, but was first imported into the U.S. in 2014. His neighbors in the Grand Cru village of Mesnil-sur-Oger include Salon, Pierre Peters, and Gonet. In fact, he’s one of the few producers of the lauded Les Chétillons vineyard.
This 100% Chardonnay champagne vibrates with the energy of Le Mesnil’s white chalk soils, and its crystalline fruit, saline minerality, and creamy texture will leave you wanting a second glass in no time. While we apologize we can’t bring these Michelin-starred restaurants to your hometown, we can put a case of their favorite Champagne in your cellar today. À votre santé!
