Near-Mythical Perfectly-Cellared Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Near-Mythical Perfectly-Cellared Châteauneuf-du-Pape

100-point winemaker Xavier Vignon has been delighting Wine Access clients with stunning Rhône Valley wines for years. His consistency is near-mythical, matching pedigree with incredible value across appellation, variety, and price range. But even in Xavier’s vaunted portfolio, certain wines can’t help but stand out. Châteauneuf-du-Pape “La Réserve VII, IX, X” is a 96-point blockbuster that had Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate swooning: “an hedonistic and decadent release that dishes out massive amounts of black raspberry, raspberry, spice cake, licorice and crushed flower… Gorgeously full-bodied and textured on the palate, yet with remarkable freshness and purity.” We learned recently that Xavier held a number of cases back. After years of cellar slumber, possibly our last 20-case allocation, now perfectly aged and ready to drink, is available to Wine Access clients. Up to $115 elsewhere, or just $79 per bottle for a one-of-a-kind blend from Rhône’s greatest vigneron.

As the name suggests, “La Réserve VII IX X” is an assemblage of Xavier’s finest barrels from 2007 (43%), 2009 (21%) and 2010 (36%), a wildly complex, multi-vintage blend, sourced from several of the greatest sites in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. And while the “VII IX X” garnered one of the most ecstatic 96-point reviews in the 35-year history of The Wine Advocate, Robert Parker wasn’t the only one who couldn’t get enough. Wine Access clients awarded an incredible 447 4- and 5-star reviews to the “VII IX X” for a remarkable average of 4.4 out of 5. The most telling review may have come from Richard from Cypress, CA who called the “VII IX X,” “outrageously delicious,” adding, “I could kick myself for not buying more.” While we certainly understand the sentiment, we’re happy to report that that won’t be necessary. One more allocation is up for grabs. But not for long.
