Reverence for the Vineyard, for Seven Generations
Bringing terrific small-house grower Champagnes to our members is one of the missions of our Champagne Club—and the likes of Champagne Roger Barnier you’re VERY unlikely to see elsewhere.
Barnier’s Cuvée Brut Champagne is a bracing and refreshing bottle grown in the Côteaux du Morin, AKA the Val du Petit Morin. This small valley southwest of Champagne’s Côte des Blancs is well-known by the likes of cult producer Ulysse Colin, and the Barnier family has a substantial foothold, with 35 plots spread out over about 20 acres.
This house, under the leadership of Frédéric Berthelot—the seventh generation of the Barnier family and founder Roger Barnier’s grandson—has gained a strong reputation for meticulous vineyard work, especially low yields. They make an effort to understand and maximize their results with each grape variety. This has led to considerable renown for their efforts with Meunier. In fact, their top cuvée is an Extra Brut produced from Meunier grapes grown in a vineyard planted in 1910.
Roger Barnier Cuvée Brut is a true rarity in the US, and thanks to our connections, Wine Access is one of the only places it can be found. The wine consists of all three principal Champagne grapes—Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier—of which about 60% came from a single vintage. The other 40% is a blend of older reserve wines raised in stainless steel and large neutral barrels. This reserve wine gives a wonderful, leesy complexity that shows up in this wine as baked croissant and marzipan.
