A Champion of Expressive Blanc de Blancs
The Grand Cru village of Chouilly produces some of the world’s most revered Chardonnay. The 29 grower-producers selected by the exclusive Club Trésors de Champagne (Special Club) produce some of the finest wines in Champagne.
Roland Champion has a foot in both camps.
The Éclat de Craie is Champion’s signature Champagne, and it shows both the luxe sophistication of Chouilly Blanc de Blancs and the supreme dedication to quality that got them selected for the Special Club. It’s a pure and finely textured wine, with notes of orchard fruit, toasted hazelnut, brioche, and flint that play out over a mouthwatering mineral tension—a crystal-clear rendering of everything that makes the Chouilly Grand Cru so enticing.
If the Grand Crus of Cramant are known for their creaminess and those of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger for their steely structure, Chouilly Blanc de Blancs exude a fantastic, wound-up richness and exquisite citrus aromatics. Despite its small size, Roland Champion is among the most respected producers of Chouilly, and the Champion family has a deep and historic connection to the land.
They trace their family’s presence in the village back nearly 300 years. For decades, they sold their coveted Chardonnay to négociants—it wasn’t until 1929 that André Champion decided that their grapes were simply too good to be presented to the world under any other name. Today, the family continues their legacy on 40 plots around Chouilly, many with a south-southeast exposure and chalk-limestone soils that impart terrific mineral complexity. The Éclat de Craie blends 15 of those estate plots into a deeply nuanced wine, then ages it in bottle for at least 36 months before release.
This has emerged as an energetic, wholly tantalizing Champagne from the hands of esteemed, creative, and impassioned grower-producers. We think you’ll love it as much as we do.
