Apologies, Your Highness...

There might be no wine more painstakingly made, patiently cellared, and passionately sought-after than Vega Sicilia’s famously difficult-to-obtain Único. It stands with the Bordeaux First Growths in quality, it TOPS them in rarity, which is why any collector should be thrilled to have magnums of the 2009 and 2010 vintages in their cellar..

The ‘09 garnered 98 points from both James Suckling and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, while the ‘10 earned 99 from Suckling. When you compare these wines to First Growths with identical scores—like the 98-point 2009 Margaux at $1,233 and 99-point 2010 Lafite at $1,426—it’s clear that they deliver incredible value to your cellar.

The scarcity of Único can be summed up in one anecdote: The British Embassy once tried to secure enough for a royal dinner for Queen Elizabeth II herself, and was granted just four cases from the winery. Both the 2009 and 2010, comprising 94% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon grown on low-yielding 60-65-year-old vines, aged over a decade at the winery, in barrel and bottle. Now in magnum, they will thrive for decades—although if you open one in the near term, you’ll surely be as impressed as the Wine Access fans who have given past vintages a staggering 4.8 rating.
