Roc de Cambes is another recent upstart by Bordeaux superstar Francois Mitjavile. On the banks of the Dordogne in the Cotes de Bourg, it was the vineyard's south facing slopes in a natural amphitheater that caught Mitjavile's eye. After purchasing the estate in 1987, Mitjavile replanted the 12 hectare vineyard to 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Malbec. He also renovated the 14th century cellars in the winery. The result: a lush and often downright exotic Merlot based blend, that's arguably tops in the appellation.
