About Lange Winery
About Lange Winery
Located in the Dundee Hills of Willamette Valley in Oregon, Lange Winery crafts a wide range of balanced wines using the grapes grown on the estate. To supplement their production, they source grapes from local vineyards. They’re known as pioneers in the production of new-world Pinot Gris. In fact, they were the first winery to put out a barrel-fermented reserve, which was highly regarded by Wine Spectator magazine.
The winery was founded 30 years ago by Don and Wendy Lange. In 1987, the winery released its first vintage which included three varietals: Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. Don’s son, Jesse, joined the team in 2004 as General Manager and also sits on a number of wine industry boards, including the Oregon Pinot Camp and the Willamette Valley Wineries Association. The winery currently bottles six varieties of Pinot Noir. They maintain principles of artisanal winemaking philosophy at all times.
Vineyard
Lange Winery owns a total of 60 acres of land on three different properties in the Dundee Hills. 45 acres of vineyards are planted with a combination of Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. The Mia Block consists of 15 acres and was planted with Pinot Noir in 2004. The 15-acre Redside Vineyard was purchased in 2006 and planted with Pinot Noir in 2007. It’s named for the Redside trout which are indigenous to the Deschutes River Basin.
These vineyards are part of the Dundee Hills Appellation, which is famous for its volcanic soils. Vines in the region can grow deep and reach the nourishment they need to produce healthy, well-structured grapes. In addition, the elevation and climate in the area help the grapes ripen well, resulting in consistently high-quality wines from Lange Winery and other local winemakers.
Wines
Lange Winery puts out a wide range of wines, though Pinot Noir is their flagship style. The 2015 Pinot Noir Reserve is a blend of some of the most complex and high-quality wines in their arsenal. It contains notes of black cherry, cinnamon, saddle leather, and clove. On the palate, it shows hints of rosemary, wood smoke, and Oregon strawberries. It has a long finish with sharp tannins. The 2017 Pinot Gris Reserve offers up notes of stone fruit, melon, and minerals. It has a rich texture with flavors of orange blossom, tropical fruit, and honeysuckle. This wine is well-balanced with a light acidity and undertones of French oak.
The 2016 Lange Estate Vineyards Chardonnay is in its fourth iteration. This is an extremely limited wine created from a blend of their three Estate Dijon-clone Chardonnay grapes. It provides notes of vanilla and minerals on the nose. Flavors include lemon custard, stone fruit, and thyme. The 2015 Lange Estate, Mia Mousseux Brut Rose Sparkling was a first for Lange winery. It’s made from 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay. The result is an elegant, yet bubbly wine with an earthy note. It has a dry finish with hints of gooseberry, dried apple, and grapefruit.
