About Tiefenbrunner
The Tiefenbrunner Wine Estate is one of the oldest in the province of South Tyrol in northern Italy. They’re committed to upholding the principles of traditional winemaking and also using modern techniques to produce high-quality, elegant wines. The estate practices environmentally-friendly planting methods, limiting their yields for variety-specific production. Both reds and whites are grown in conditions optimal for their development. The Tiefenbrunner family took over the winery in 2012; however, this estate dates back five generations. The Tiefenbrunner’s goal is to preserve a centuries-old winemaking tradition. Visitors to Tiefenbrunner can enjoy tastings along with food pairings at Wolkenstein Cellar. The grounds of the estate are spotted with caves, small lakes, and grottos.
Vineyards
The Tiefenbrunner family owns 25 hectares of vineyards in Kurtatsch, Entiklar, and Margreid. All the vineyard sites are between 250 and 1,000 meters above sea-level. The estate also sources grapes from other growers they’ve maintained close relationships with for years. The diversity of their grapes requires an intimate knowledge of the terroir from each vineyard. The moderate climate along with traces of clay and limestone in the soil provides an excellent environment for vine growth. Vineyards on the western slopes of South Tyrolean Unterland have a unique microclimate that allows for a long growing season. However, Tiefenbrunner’s top vineyard is located on the Feinberg mountain. This three-hectare vineyard, which sits at 1,000 meters above sea level, is the highest Muller-Thurgau vineyard in all of Europe. It’s home to the award-winning Feldmarschall Von Fenner.
Wines
Tiefenbrunner releases four distinct lines of wine. Each differs in style and have their own vinification process. The VIGNA line follows in the footsteps of Grand Cru. These world-class wines are derived exclusively from one location. They require a combination of proper tending of the soil along with the right climate conditions. Wines in this line come from low-yielding vines and require precise production techniques along with careful storage. The Feldmarschall Von Fenner is a part of this selection of wines. Next is the LINTICLARUS selection. This line includes complex reds that are all produced from highly-established, small vineyards. Grapes for this selection are harvested late, and the vinification process is extremely detail-oriented. These reds are aged in oak barrels and can continue to mature well in the bottle.
The TURMHOF selection is created from the grapes of a number of different hillsides, all well above sea level. The name of this line was actually derived from the ancestral seat of Tiefenbrunner. The wines included are characterized by a unique varietal purity. They’re aged in wood casks to help bring out the natural complexity of the grapes. This is a diverse line, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, and Pinot Bianco all included. Finally, the MERUS selection is made from grapes from vineyards in the Bassa Atesina. These wines are aged in concrete and steel vats and bottled young. The goal is to preserve the fresh authenticity of the grape. This is another diverse line from Tiefenbrunner, with examples of Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Schiava, and Gewurtztraminer.
