Galloni: “Easily One of the Wines of the Vintage”

In 2005, Château Margaux, one of the most storied wine estates in the world, produced one of their greatest wines ever. It was a privilege to offer it, and it will be a privilege to drink it. A First Growth collectible from a spectacular vintage, in a format that will tempt you to open it on a whim, or perhaps to accompany an intimate dinner for two. What could be better?

Our allocation of the 2005 Château Margaux was born of a conversation we had with the estate’s Master Sommelier, Thomas Burke. We were doing an event that featured vintages going back to the mid-90s, but the 2005 was noticeably absent. We brought it up as the evening drew down, and he promised to scour the estate’s library and see what he could come up with. Needless to say, he delivered in a big way.

We’ll never forget when the 2005s were released. Robert Parker called the vintage “one of the most singular years of the past five decades” for its outrageous concentration, power, and structure. The wines were catnip for collectors, and the frenzy drove Bordeaux prices higher than we’ve ever seen them.

The ‘05 vintage was one of the great triumphs of Paul Pontallier, Margaux’s late, legendary winemaker. It’s a monument of a bottling, with the sumptuous fruit and beguiling aromatics that are trademarks of the estate. The wine has stood out in numerous “15 years later” retrospectives, and just last year, Vinous called it “off the charts and easily one of the wines of the vintage,” awarding it a 99-point score.
