Collectable Red from Legendary “Unico”

Unico is notoriously rare and difficult to obtain. The British Embassy famously tried to secure enough for a royal dinner for Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen was granted just four cases from the winery.

This allocation comes directly from Vega Sicilia, thanks to a longstanding friendship with Elisa Kwon de Alvarez, who’s husband, Pablo Alvarez, is Vega Sicilia’s CEO (his family has owned this great estate since 1982). When compared to Bordeaux First Growths and cult Napa Cabernets of equal quality, this recently-released 12-year-old wine, matured in oak for an incredible 6 years, is an incredible value.

Spain’s most collectible red wine, Vega Sicilia’s “Unico” is legendary — one of the great wines of the world. Undoubtedly of Médoc First Growth quality, author and legendary wine expert Hugh Johnson has said “Vega Sicilia is the Latour” of Spain.

The long anticipated 2005 — released after the 2007 and 2008s! — will go down as one of the great vintages of Unico in the 21st century. The wine is profound and majestic, providing deeply thought-provoking pleasure, with layers of wild black fruits, exotic spices, anise, truffles, game, wild dried herbs and potpourri. The palate is thick and dense, yet seamlessly balanced with fresh acidity and rich velvety tannins. A meditation wine that gives wondrous pleasure now, but will reward further cellaring through to 2035.

The critics share our enthusiasm for the 2005 Unico, with Vinous rating it 97 points and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rating it 96. Compared to Bordeaux First Growths and cult Napa Cabernets, this wine is a sensational value.
