Fan Favorite: Tom Eddy’s Mailing-list-only Cabernet Sauvignon

When we first discovered Tom Eddy’s brilliant, decadent Cabernet Sauvignons, we were hooked. But today’s release of the 2014 Elodian Cabernet Sauvignon is a crowd-sourced one: After six vintages and 318 perfect 5-star reviews, Elodian is arguably our most popular Napa Valley mountain Cabernet ever.

In Wine Spectator’s 2014 “dream vintage” Eddy did it again. 1,500 bottles from our first AND second allocation sold out in mere hours. Normally a tasting room exclusive, we wrestled another 500 bottles out of the winery, brandishing the same power, density, and—our favorite part—that chocolate-covered mountain blueberry finish.

Today’s Elodian once again proves that an iconoclastic veteran winemaker can elevate even the most brilliant of vintages. But if you ask Tom, he’s always quick to credit everyone and anyone else, from the picking crew to the growers to the vineyards. “It’s the potpourri of multiple vineyards that is Elodian,” he told us. “During any given harvest, the Elodian can be a blend of up to eight different vineyard sites throughout Napa, each contributing a different quality, and adding to the complexity of the wine.” In 2014, Tom sourced Cabernet from 10 different vineyards.

First there’s Bella Vista Vineyard on the jagged slopes of Diamond Mountain, providing the structural backbone to the Elodian. The second mountain ingredient is the legendary Stagecoach Vineyard, which turns out some of the most powerfully concentrated Cabernets in the valley. Just a stone's throw away from there on Pritchard Hill, home to several of Napa’s most profound reds, Tom debuted grapes from Greeg Mountain Ranch, 1,250 feet above sea level. Elkington Vineyard on Atlas Peak, the third-highest in Napa and recognized for the cold overnight temperatures that slow maturation, imparts its signature acidity and hedonistic, dark-berry fruit; while Kate’s Vineyard in Oak Knoll brings black-fruit preserve character and robust tannin.

Outside Tom’s tasting room, bottles of Elodian have a mythical status—you simply can’t find them anywhere. We can only hope this won’t be our last allocation...
