Top of the Heap—Drink Now, Drink Often, Drink Later

Hitting over 4 out of 5 stars for three vintages running, 100-point winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus (of Chappellet fame) has turned out his most impressive Coho effort yet, courtesy of the outstanding 2015 growing season in Napa.

His highest-rated to date, the 2015 Coho Headwaters Proprietary Red Wine Napa Valley earned 94 points from the former European Bureau Chief of Wine Spectator, James Suckling, who lauded its “full body, round and juicy tannins,” and noted that it impressively conveys the “tension for the vintage.” It’s powerful, yet light on its feet and extremely generous.

Titus made his name with the lush, decadent, high-scoring Cabernets from Chappellet and further honed his skills with his namesake Titus label, which Robert Parker has noted for its “consistent high quality” year over year. All that experience producing wines scoring 95+ is now pouring into Coho, and it shows in the ripe concentration and refined structure of this Headwaters blend. It’s impossible not to finish this bottle once it’s opened. It’s just that good.

2015 was Titus’ third vintage at the helm of Coho, and in this release, he took what little crop he had from the low-yielding vintage and produced a wine to enjoy now or cellar for later. In the glass, this big, bold red kicks up sumptuous aromas of crushed black fruits, graphite, and cedar. Powerful and deeply layered but light on its feet, it shows the intensity of the small 2015 vintage with generous red and blue fruits, crème de cassis, and blackcurrants

The 2015 offers a heady, luxurious experience today, and will impress over the next decade. The key to this Bordeaux blend is a core of dark berry fruit complemented by dusty tannins and crushed-stone minerality, which gives it the legs to go the long haul. We highly suggest locking in six or more bottles—some to enjoy now, and some to experience a bottle or two each year over the next 5-10 as the pronounced tannin profile softens and the wine develops further complexities.

Founded by 30-year wine industry veteran Gary Lipp—an alum of Paul Hobbs, Chalone, Robert Mondavi, and eventually Chappellet, where he first met Titus—Coho transmits Napa Valley terroir in wines renowned for their power and balance. Since 2013, Titus has been at the winemaking helm of Coho, stewarding blends like Headwaters to dense, fruit-laden fame.

Grown primarily in Coombsville, the Headwaters blend combines an almost electric sense of energy and spice with the polished, rich, and powerful backbone of classic Napa Cabernet blends. Just as the previous vintage delivered a powerful package, this 2015 delivers power, finesse, and ageability. No matter how, no matter where, no matter when you drink it—you will enjoy it.
