The Rare Beauty of Aged Albariño

Unoaked, young Rías Baixas Albariño is a joy to drink, especially when paired with freshly shucked oysters—but it’s also only half the story.

The 2017 Granbazán Limousin Albariño represents the other half. From an estate hailed by Decanter as one of Spain’s greatest producers of Albariño, this classic Galician-coast cuvée displays a stunning Meursault-like richness and depth thanks to six months of oak aging and years of cellaring in bottle.

Only a handful of other white wines in the world can achieve the resulting balance of freshness and weight—and nearly all of them cost MULTIPLES more.

The 2017 Limousin was also named “Best Spanish White Wine” and a “brilliant example of Albariño’s ability to age” at the 2020 International Wine Challenge, co-chaired by wine authority Tim Atkin MW.

For this cuvée, Granbazán harvested from some of the oldest vines at the highest elevation of their Tremoedo estate, which give low yields and small berries with magnificent concentration.

A relatively young producer in the region, Granbazán has risen to the top on the strength of its classic terroir and forward-thinking viticulture. In the vineyard, the maritime climate and sea breezes cleanse vines and lock in acidity. The vines also lie so close to the water that its briny influence can be felt in the texture and aromas of the wines.

Decanter has praised Granbazán’s “extremely open-minded” approach to producing better—and more ageworthy—Albariño, declaring them “one of the very best wineries in the region.” With decades of experience using oak aging, Granbazán has perfected the art of applying just enough wood to round out the mouthfeel without compromising Albarino’s crisp, sea-sprayed freshness. When it comes to aged Albariño, few do it better.
