Iconic Riesling Only Made in the Best Years

Trimbach’s Riesling Selection de Vieilles Vignes is one of the most complex, mineral-rich, intense white wines we’ve had the pleasure to drink.

We’re not alone in that assessment: Wine Enthusiast ranked this 2017 as their #2 Wine of the Year—ahead of a slew of much more expensive bottles—awarding it a 96-point score for its combination of precision, elegance, and cellar-worthiness. This is all the glory of Alsatian Riesling in a single bottle.

We’ve come to expect magic from the Selection de Vieilles Vignes, which is only made in the best vintages. Hailing from some of Trimbach’s oldest vines in their home village of Ribeauvillé—renowned for its limestone-heavy Muschelkalk soils that produce laser-like acidity in the wines—this is a master class in the importance of terroir and traditional winemaking.

Once poured, the first thing that hits your nose is a blast of mineral intensity. Smoky flint, chalk, and lemon zest drive the aromas, with hints of Japanese yellow plums, sage, and fennel. On the palate, there’s an aristocratic austerity—the wine is driven by umami minerality more than fruit—with accents of white peach and plenty of lemon zest. Resolutely dry on the finish, it lingers for minutes.

Trimbach is one of the five biggest vineyard owners in Alsace, which means they can be exceptionally picky about what goes into their prestige bottlings, like this selection of old-vine Riesling. Their dedication to quality has made their name practically synonymous with Alsace.

Trimbach’s wines are known for their age-worthiness, expanding in complexity and depth with time. The Selection de Vieilles Vignes is delicious today, but will be lights-out in another decade, so make sure that you put enough in your cellar.
