A Top Bottling from a La Morra Icon

We shudder to think what would happen to our Member Services team if we failed to offer the 2018 Cordero di Montezemolo’s Monfalletto Barolo.

The 2017 was far and away our best-selling Barolo last year—and once our members put it on their tables, they rewarded it with an eye-watering 4.6-star rating, again making it the champion of its category. That was on the heels of the rapid-sellout ‘16, which merited a slew of five-star reviews with comments like, “I would buy as much as I can.”

Cordero di Montezemolo is in La Morra, one of the most renowned Barolo villages. For 19 generations now, the Cordero di Montezemolo family has presided over a historic parcel that Antonio Galloni called “one of the most picturesque properties in all of Piedmont.”

Selected from the estate’s best plots, this Monfalletto provides a perfectly polished snapshot of the family’s exquisite estate.

Grown on an EU certified organic vineyard, the grapes for Monfalletto come from 15- to 50-year-old plantings that enjoy advantageous southeast and southwest exposures. It’s one of the few estates in Barolo that covers contiguous vineyards—a rare occurrence, since many wineries draw Nebbiolo from an assortment of different sites.

Separate lots are vinified, then aged in both French and Slovenian oak for 18–24 months before blending, bottling, and another year of cellaring.

The 2018 is a tremendous success for Cordero di Montezemolo, who handled the hot vintage with aplomb, delivering a fourth-straight triumph. Classic red-fruit aromas accented by notes of red rose and orange peel lead into a multidimensional palate that’s packed with plum and spice, girded with iron tannins that beg for time in a decanter or the cellar.
