    A Canyon Spills Its Secrets

We sampled a $185 Cabernet from a small, historic Oakville estate in a restaurant close to a year ago and fell in love. It was as big and rich as they come in Napa, with unmistakable power.

Thanks to a bit of behind-the-scenes networking, we managed to tap that exact same estate vineyard, putting the grapes through 20 months in 30% new French oak plus more bottle aging.

This one is going out to our long-time, power-loving Cabernet buyers. If you asked a large cross-section of Napa Cab drinkers to design a Cabernet they’d like to sip seven nights a week, we think they’d come up with something exactly like this 2018 Echoes in the Canyon.

Silky-smooth and showing off an impenetrable purple hue in the glass, the nose luxuriates in rich tones of new French oak and vanilla. With a lacquered smoothness on the tongue, full tannins structure the massive concentration, which is richly expressed in big notes of mellow plum, crushed black fruit, mocha, coffee, and smoke. A fine, raspberry-infused acidity soars through to the end, closing on a long, dried-cherry finish.

Oakville opulence doesn’t come at a better price—make sure this Napa heavyweight doesn’t slip past you.

The estate that we sourced this Cabernet from is one of the oldest wineries in Napa, with a history dating back to the 1800s. We recognized the name right away when we saw it on the restaurant menu. Located in a canyon just above the Silverado Trail, the wines have frequently impressed Vinous’s Antonio Galloni, who has called them “sensual,” “sumptuous,” and “impressive.”

If we could tell you the name, we’d advise you to go visit—the view is quite breathtaking. From the mountainside heights, you can see the sloping vineyards dotted with rocks, caressed by cool breezes, and warmed by the sun, which concentrates heat here for long portions of the day. Clay-loam soil is shallow and well-draining, driving down vine vigor and leading to an instantly-recognizable intensity in the aromatics and on the palate. Dalla Valle and PlumpJack are both just five minutes away from the property, and this wine shares in their grandiose, only-in-Napa concentration.

Big, dense, and satisfying, this is the Napa Cab so many of us crave, priced to move fast.
