Paso’s Toniest Neighborhood

Austin Hope and L’Aventure are neighbors. Saxum, Linne Calodo, and Clos Solène sit just beyond. In the Templeton Gap District—the coolest corner of Paso Robles—Derby Wine Estates farms more than 90 acres right in the thick of it, on Live Oak Road, off the same limestone-rich soils and cool coastal nights that made those names famous.

The 2019 Derby Vineyard Cabernet is what that address tastes like: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 22 months in French oak, all bold cassis and dark cherry wrapped in silky tannin, with the lift and freshness those cold nights lock in.

The Templeton Gap is a literal gap in the hills—a break in the Santa Lucia Range that funnels cool Pacific air inland every afternoon, where the swing from warm days to cold nights can top 40 degrees. That daily tension—fruit ripening in the sun, acidity locking in after dark—over calcareous, limestone-rich soils gives the district’s reds their rare mix of power and poise. Veteran vineyard manager Steve Vierra, a Certified Professional Soil Scientist, has the Derby Vineyard dialed in across its 90-plus acres of Bordeaux, Rhône, and Spanish varieties.

In the cellar, winemaker Sean Geoghegan brings a résumé that runs through the iconic Mount Eden. Ray and Pam Derby, longtime farmers, founded Derby Wine Estates in 2006, and set up their tasting room in the historic Almond Growers building downtown—a 1922 landmark now on the National Register of Historic Places.

In the glass, look for a red-ruby core and a perfumed nose of lilac, violet, and cassis that gives way to dark cherry, vanilla, and a whisper of dried herb. The palate is juicy and generous, ripe fruit at the center, framed by fine, silky tannins and a finish that hangs on.

2019 was a banner vintage on the Central Coast. Vinous praised the region’s 2018 and 2019 wines as a run of outstanding bottlings marked by energy, precision, and complexity—built for the cellar, but hard to resist young.
