Great Sancerre Never Goes Out of Style

Just one sip reveals the mouthwatering 2019 Hubert Brochard Tradition to be as classic and irresistible as Sancerre gets. But with prices continuing to skyrocket due to the category’s soaring popularity, this value price adds a whole new level of gotta-have-it to an already stellar bottle.

“If your palate were a racetrack, this would be Formula One, not NASCAR,” our Master Sommelier Sur Lucero said to us, as he poured our tastes, and a little bit more for himself.

With crisp, clean aromatics revealing subtle yellow grapefruit and Kaffir lime leaf, and the assertive palate showing a lively, kinetic energy, this is focused and precise with good cut throughout—beyond light on its feet. It’s a wine that begs for multiple sips even before the waves of minerality are done coursing through the long, chalky finish.

For this kind of nimble, racy Sancerre, our price is a steal. Needless to say, we’re racing to claim ours in bulk, and suggest you follow suit.

Situated on the eastern edges of the Loire Valley’s Sancerre AOC, Domaine Hubert Brochard is run by the fifth and sixth generations of Brochards, one of only a small number of Sancerre producers who continue to harvest most of their grapes by hand. From their winery in the tiny hamlet of Chavignol, the family has always produced classically styled Sancerre that benefits from the range of soils across their diverse holdings.

With an average vine age of 30 years, the 2019 Sancerre Tradition makes the most out of its inherent complexity using an impressive palette of soil variety. Its grapes come from six different communes in Sancerre, capturing the region’s most distinctive terroir all in one bottle.

The Kimmeridgian marl gives the Tradition its power, while the region’s famed Silex flint provides its strong mineral character, and the chalky caillottes limestone accounts for all those attractive aromatics that can only come from the unmistakable Sauvignon Blancs of Sancerre. The wine’s vinification in stainless steel preserves all those bright aromas, while keeping the wine fresh and racy as it zips through the palate. And at this price, the 2019 Hubert Brochard Tradition Sancerre will be history in a hurry.
