200 Years of Riesling History in an Under-$20 Bottle
Georg Albrecht Schneider, whose history dates back to the Napoleonic era, is one of the most storied producers in the Nierstein region. The ninth generation of winemakers in the family has brought several lifetimes of vinicultural know-how to create this incandescent 2019 Kabinett Riesling.
The lightest style of Riesling, this is delicate as lace, the nose finely embroidered with scents of honey, jasmine, and geraniums. Glossy and succulent on the palate, yielding a sense of fragility yet also tensile strength, freshly cut lime peel mixes with crushed rock and slate, resolving into a mouthwatering, smoke-kissed finish.
“This estate has been turning out high-quality as well as notably affordable wines for decades,” cheers Vinous. With critical acclaim mounting, this isn’t a value you’ll see often for a single-vineyard wine from a legendary, historic estate.
The Schneider pedigree stretches back centuries. The original base of the family's vineyard holdings was purchased by ancestor Kaspar Schneider from Napoleon Bonaparte, who was selling old property to finance military expeditions. The winery proper was founded in 1806.
In 2012, Ursula and Steffen Müller took the reins from Ursula’s father, Albrecht, after he’d overseen 40 vintages as the head of the estate. Under their watch, the wines have become even more clean, crisp, and precise, with this 2019 Kabinett achieving the kind of radiant Riesling aficionados of the grape dream about. The grapes were grown in the limestone/calcareous loess soils of the 12-acre Paterberg vineyard, a site known for producing gorgeous fruit that yields wines with a cool, gossamer texture with mineral verve and citrus cut—everything we love in a great Riesling, and everything that the 2019 Schneider Kabinett Riesling delivers.
