    The Gold Rush Pays Off…Again

During the mid-19th century, resourceful immigrants came to California hoping to make their fortunes in the Gold Rush. Many settled in Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley, where they discovered a treasure of a different kind: the area’s incredible capacity for cultivating wine grapes—especially Zinfandel.

The pull of great Zinfandel never abated. Today legends like Ridge Lytton Springs and Rafanelli have cemented the AVA’s position as THE top growing region in the world for Zinfandel.

Adrian Jewell Manspeaker’s gold-strike comes in the form of the Raymond Burr Vineyard—a prime site that’s only a few minutes down West Dry Creek Road from Rafanelli. Originally planted by the actor famous for his role as Perry Mason, its gently rolling hills and dusty reddish soils are perfect for growing powerful Zin with thick skins and an intense personality.

Adrian worked his first harvest over 16 years ago, learning from Anthill Farm’s Web Marquez and Peay Vineyards’ Vanessa Wong—so the fruit is in trusted hands. The 2019 growing season delivered an easy harvest, allowing Adrian to pick at his leisure and extract maximum fruit from berries rich in silky tannins.

He loves to give his Zinfandel a properly long elevage in high-end French oak, and was rewarded with a bottle that pours a dark ruby—and smells like a million bucks. Aromas of sun-kissed blackberries, spiced plums, and figs mingle with exotic spices, leading to a plush palate that delivers in spades.
