Napa Cabernet at Its Apex
No Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard in Napa Valley is more historic and revered than To Kalon, and no one produces a more gorgeous expression of the site than TOR Wines’ Tor Kenward and Jeff Ames.
Their 2019 To Kalon Cabernet, from a spectacular vintage, is Napa Cabernet at its absolute best. The stunning bottle “just about jumps from the glass with its brilliant perfume,” said Jeb Dunnuck in his 97+ point review. James Suckling and Wine Advocate threw in 97-point reviews of their own. It’s a collector must for Napa fans.
Kenward, the owner, who has spent nearly a half-century as a vintner, is one of the most revered cult-Cabernet maestros in California. Robert Parker himself, a longtime friend, called him “the consummate connoisseur,” and praised him for “pushing the envelope in a dramatic and brilliant manner.”
Ames, the winemaker, learned his craft hands-on under Thomas Rivers Brown, considered by many to be the best in the Valley. Brown brought on Ames to work on several projects, including stints at Schrader, Maybach, and Outpost.
“Great vineyards deserve respect, and experience has taught me that in winemaking, less is more,” Kenward has stated, and nowhere is that more on display than in the TOR To Kalon Cabernet. It has all the depth and richness of the winery’s classic Cabs from the famed vineyard, but with more refined tannins. It also has the highest percentage of Cabernet Franc Ames has ever included in the bottling, lending it a lift and freshness that led him to call it “perhaps the most food-friendly To Kalon we have ever made.”
